Real Tennis

How do I play?

Real Tennis is played in an asymmetrical court which contains many unusual features, sloping roofs, openings (galleries) in the walls and a main wall which has a kink in it (tambour). The game is played with racquets made of wood and hand-made balls and uses a scoring system similar to that of “lawn tennis” with the addition of a “chase”.

What are the benefits?

  • Real Tennis is a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone of almost any age. Whether you’re eight or eighty, as long as you can swing a racket and move, you can play.
  • Due to the smaller rackets and heavier balls Real Tennis will improve your hand-eye-coordination
  • It is a tactical game that will exercise your mind as well as your body. The game will consistently produce new scenarios, often resembling a chess match.

Where can I play?

There are 27 active courts in the UK.

  • You can join a Real Tennis Club with membership rates starting from £20 per month.
  • A lot of the courts are located in schools who offer membership opportunities for members of the community.
