June 15th was due to be the start of a glorious week of grass court tennis returning to Queen’s once more. Although the sun was shining, centre court remained untouched due to the Tournament being cancelled as a consequence of Covid-19. However, the Queen’s Club Foundation, in partnership with the Queen’s Club, were determined to not let this week of annual celebration pass by. The Queen’s members may not have been able to gather in the stands watching the world’s finest tennis players, but we provided them with lots of exciting free online events to enjoy from the comfort of their own home, with donations to The Queen’s Club Foundation.
The week began with the biggest announcement of all: centre court was to be opened up for Members to ahve the opporunity to play on it via a ballot! It was £20 to enter the ballot with all funds going to The Queen’s Club Foundation. Through the luck of the draw 60 members, and their guests, have won the opportunity to play on centre court. Dreams will be fulfilled as members step out onto the court which has hosted the greats of the tennis world for over 100 years. A huge thank you must go to the grounds team at Queen’s for preparing the surface throughout lockdown to the highest of standards, and also to Ross Niland, the Queen’s Club CEO, for allowing The Queen’s Club Foundation this opportunity.
On Monday night Question One got everyone’s brain whizzing on Kahoot as we found out who was the ultimate quiz champion. After over 40 questions, testing a range of knowledge from the Simpsons in 2019 to the inaugural Queen’s tournament in 1890, we finally found our winners. A big thank you must go to HG Walter for donating a BBQ box for our winners. For more of their great products visit their website: www.hgwalter.com.
Wednesday evening had a real treat in store with the 2019 Singles and Doubles Champion Feliciano Lopez answering all of the members’ questions. The evening was hosted by David Law, the BBC’s tennis commentator and co-host of the Tennis Podcast. Feliciano had everyone on tenterhooks as he regaled stories of his amazing victories in 2019, including some wonderful insight into why playing on centre court at Queen’s is so special and what it was like to play with Andy Murray. The Queen’s Club Foundation are incredibly grateful to Feliciano for giving up his time for us, and all of us are excited to see him defend his title in 2021.
Tournament week would not have been the same without recognising the Championships Party on Thursday evening. With the power of modern technology we were able to host the party on Zoom with DJ Tony Perry. Tony has hosted some of the biggest parties including Wembley Stadium, and counting down NYE under the Burj in Dubai. He was set to rock the Members’ Enclosure this year, so instead he moved the Official QC Party to Zoom. Armed with their drinks in hand members danced the night away in the virtual company of all of their friends. A big thank you to DJ Tony Perry for giving up his time to support us, please do follow him on Instagram: @djtonyperry.
The week of June 15th was meant to be one of tennis, sun, and enjoyment. We may not have had the tennis and the sun, but we certainly had lots of enjoyment. A huge thank you must go to everyone who participated in our events across the week, and for all of your generosity in helping raise vital funds for the Foundation. In total we managed to raise over £7,000, money which will enable young local people to get active again when restrictions are lifted. Finally, a huge thank you to all of partners who helped run these events, and in particular to The Queen’s Club for their continued support to The Queen’s Club Foundation.
